The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
